On this ๐‹๐š๐›๐จ๐ฎ๐ซ ๐ƒ๐š๐ฒ, as we honour the hands and hearts that build our societies, it is important to reflect not only on the value of workโ€”but on its spiritual dimension.

In his poetic masterpiece The Prophet, Kahlil Gibran devotes a chapter to Work, portraying it not as a burden, but as a He writes:

โ€œWork is love made visible.โ€

He describes labour as a way of aligning oneself with the earthโ€™s purpose, becoming part of the song of creation. For Gibran, when we work with joy and intention, even the most mundane actsโ€”like baking bread or weaving clothโ€”become infused with meaning and affection, as if offered to someone beloved. This poetic vision finds a powerful mirror in ๐ˆ๐ฌ๐ฅ๐š๐ฆ๐ข๐œ ๐ญ๐ž๐š๐œ๐ก๐ข๐ง๐ ๐ฌ, where work is regarded as an act of worship (ibadah).

In Islam, work is not merely a worldly necessity; it is a means of spiritual elevation. When carried out with honesty, excellence, and purpose, it becomes

The Qurโ€™an teaches us:

โ€œSay, โ€˜Do [righteous] work, for Allah will see your deeds, and [so will] His Messenger and the believers.โ€™โ€ (Surah At-Tawbah 9:105)

And the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) stated:

โ€œNo one eats better food than that which he eats out of the work of his hand.โ€ (Sahih al-Bukhari, 2072)

These teachings root the notion of dignity and sacredness in labour. Whether one is a craftsman, a teacher, a farmer, or a leaderโ€”work done with integrity and sincerity is elevated to the level of ๐š๐œ๐ญ๐ข๐ฏ๐ž ๐๐ž๐ฏ๐จ๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง.

This mirrors Gibranโ€™s sentiment that:

โ€œTo love life through labour is to be intimate with lifeโ€™s inmost secret.

When we bring our fullest selves to our workโ€”with passion, honesty, and careโ€”we do more than just complete tasks. We connect with something greater.

In Islamic thought, this is aligned with the concept of ๐ˆ๐ก๐ฌ๐š๐งโ€”to work as though you see God, and if not, to know that He sees you.

Gibran adds:

โ€œAnd when you work with love, you bind yourself to yourself, and to one another, and to God.โ€

This is the spiritual underpinning of authentic work: we do not labour only for pay or recognition, but as an extension of our soulโ€™s purpose and as a contribution to the well-being of others. In this way, work can generate not only ๐ฉ๐ซ๐จ๐๐ฎ๐œ๐ญ๐ข๐ฏ๐ข๐ญ๐ฒ, but also ๐๐ž๐ž๐ฉ ๐ฌ๐š๐ญ๐ข๐ฌ๐Ÿ๐š๐œ๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง, ๐ก๐š๐ฉ๐ฉ๐ข๐ง๐ž๐ฌ๐ฌ, and ๐š ๐ฌ๐ž๐ง๐ฌ๐ž ๐จ๐Ÿ ๐ฉ๐ž๐š๐œ๐ž, because it aligns with what the Almighty has written into our very nature.

The Prophet (PBUH) once said:

โ€œIf the Day of Judgment comes while you have a seedling in your hand, plant it.โ€ (Musnad Ahmad, 12902)

This Hadith is a profound reminder:

Let us then view our daily effortsโ€”our projects, our planning, our crafting, our servingโ€”not as separate from faith, but as ๐ž๐ฑ๐ฉ๐ซ๐ž๐ฌ๐ฌ๐ข๐จ๐ง๐ฌ ๐จ๐Ÿ ๐ข๐ญ.
